Axiom is a sophisticated symbolic algebra system, originally developed at IBM, later distributed commercially by the Numerical Algorithms Group, and more recently released as free software.

By default, mathematical expressions are displayed spatially. This format is difficult to read in braille or via synthetic speech. However, alternative, linear presentations can be obtained as follows.

To use TeX format, issue these commands at the Axiom prompt:

)set output algebra off )set output tex on

To use Fortran output instead, which you may (or may not) find easier to read, give these commands:

)set output algebra off )set output fortran on
